VOICES: Speaking Up In Seattle

I'm am not a convicted felon, but I realize the issues of "disenfranchising"convicted felons. I wrote a mini-research paper for my class at Seattle Central Community College. The topic of creating more ghettos/slums due to restricting convicted felons voting rights affected my class the most. This is the little
amount of information I gathered for my mini-research paper:

"Because ex-felons tend to live in lower income neighborhoods (due to high fines they must pay for their crime), depriving them of their voting rights also impacts normal citizens who live in those neighborhoods. The Government recognize communities that recognize the government by voting.

Neighborhoods with a small percentage of voters receive less attention from local governments than neighborhoods with a large percentage of voters. Will this not make a perpetuating downward spiral of ghettos in America if people who want to vote cannot?"

California: Youth Sentenced to Life without Parole

In the 100 page report
"When I Die, They'll Send Me Home: Youth Sentenced to Life without Parole in California," Human Rights Watch found that in many cases where juveniles were prosecuted with an adult, the youth received heavier sentences than their adult codefendants. There are 227 inmates in California sentenced as juveniles to life in prison without parole.

"Sentencing children to life without parole means they will die in prison, without the possibility of a second chance at life," said Elizabeth Calvin, children's rights advocate at Human Rights Watch and author of the report.
"The public can be kept safe without locking children up forever for crimes committed when they were too young to vote, drink, or even drive."
